What We Believe
Throughout history, the Church has considered education essential to its mission and work. As those united to Christ, we believe that growing in knowledge and wisdom is unique to humans as creatures made in the image of God. Intellectual formation, when done rightly, should lead us toward God, for all knowledge is from Him, to Him, and through Him. It should also help us grow in the virtues of fortitude, prudence, justice, temperance, faith, hope, and love. Therefore, it is proper that the pursuit of learning and truth take place in community, where intellectual growth is matched with fellowship among like-minded individuals, and where the virtues can be actively tested and tried.
This is the mission that drives our work. In this endeavor, we seek to partner with parents and the Church in raising students who do not merely acquire knowledge but love wisdom; who do not merely achieve academic success but grow in godliness; and who do not merely prepare for a career or college, but are equipped to glorify and enjoy God in all they do.
This task is a large undertaking that requires constant prayer, thoughtfulness, preparation, and sacrifice, but we strive for this goal because it is worth the effort to glorify God through the raising of children in our covenant community. We know that cultivating love for Christ through the truth of Scripture and the beauty of creation will reap dividends and blessings beyond measure.
Our Vision
We are a ministry of Covenant Presbyterian Church, cultivating a community of Eastside students, educators, and parents working in partnership to know and love God and His creation so students can think critically, communicate effectively, and serve in their communities and churches.
Our Mission
To cause our students to grow in virtue, rhetorical skill, intellectual acuity, and, most centrally, in the love of God.
The Core Values that inform our mission: love, integrity, excellence, and wisdom.
Covenant Christian Schools Statement of Faith
Covenant Christian Schools embraces and teaches from a theological position that conforms to the Presbyterian Church of America (PCA) statement of faith and the Westminster Confession doctrinal standards, both of which can be found here.
We also confess the confessions of faith that the Church of our Lord has professed for generations, such as the Apostles' Creed, Nicene Creed, and the Chalcedonian Definition. This is a summary of our professions of faith that we require all teachers to profess.
• Scriptures: We believe that the Bible is the written Word of God, inspired by the Holy Spirit, and without error in its original manuscripts. The Bible reveals God’s truth, is infallible, and is authoritative in all matters on which it speaks.
• God: We believe in one God, the Lord of glory, to whom all praise and obedience are due from His creatures.
• Trinity: We believe that the one God is revealed to us in the New Testament through the three persons in the Godhead: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. These three are the one true, eternal God, the same in substance, equal in power and glory, though distinguished by their personal properties.
• Creation: We believe that God created all things out of nothing by the Word of His power, and all that He created was good.
• Humanity: We believe that humanity was created good but fell from the high estate God had given them. Through sin, humanity has been led into ruin and depravity.
• Jesus Christ: We believe that Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God, truly God and truly man, being of one substance with the Father, begotten of His Father from all eternity, and in all ways like us in His human nature except sin. Through His perfect life and sacrificial death, He atoned for the sins of all who will trust in Him alone for salvation.
• Salvation: We believe that all are sinners and are unable to save themselves from God’s displeasure, except by His mercy and grace through faith in Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
• God’s Covenant Promises: We believe that God is gracious and faithful to His people, both as individuals and from generation to generation, according to His covenant promises (Genesis 17:7; Galatians 3:15-29).
• Holy Spirit: We believe that the Holy Spirit is fully God, being of one substance with the Father and the Son, proceeding from them both. The Holy Spirit unites all who put their faith in Christ to Him, and through this union with Christ, we receive all His saving benefits, including justification, adoption, sanctification, and glorification.
• Christian Growth: We believe that all Christians united to Christ will grow in the fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Although imperfect and through many failings, they will seek to do all things to the glory of God.
• Christ’s Return: We believe that Jesus will return bodily and visibly to judge all humankind and to receive His people to Himself.
Since Covenant Christian Schools is a ministry of Covenant Presbyterian Church, we aim to teach a holistic curriculum that is in accordance with Presbyterian doctrine and practice. While we do not require all teachers to be Presbyterian, we ensure that we do not teach against the doctrines faithfully expressed in our church’s confessional documents.
Statement on Marriage, Sexuality, Gender, and Life
On Marriage
We believe the term “marriage” has only one meaning: the uniting of one man and one woman in a single, exclusive union, as delineated in Scripture (Gen 2:18-25). Marriage is a gift from God, as is singleness, and we are all called to live as God has led us in holiness, obedience, and love.
On Sexuality
We believe God intends sexual intimacy to be enjoyed only between a man and a woman with mutual consent within the marriage union (1 Cor. 6:18-7:5; Heb. 13:4). We believe that any sexual activity outside of marriage, i.e., any form of sexual immorality, including but not limited to adultery, cohabitation, fornication, rape, homosexual behavior, bisexual conduct, bestiality, incest, use of pornography, etc., is sinful and is an offense against God (Matt 15:18-20; 1 Cor. 6:9-10; Rom. 1:24-27; Exod. 20:14; Lev. 18:6-23). While there are many warnings in Scripture against sexual immorality, there is also much hope for those who have offended God’s law. As we find in 1 Corinthians 6, where Paul declares, “And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”
On Gender
We believe that God wonderfully and immutably creates each person as male or female. These two distinct, complementary genders together reflect the image and nature of God (Gen 1:26-27). Rejection of one’s biological sex is sinful and is an offense against God, yet as a people loved by a generous and Good God, we should have much sympathy for those who struggle with their gender identity and graciously, with a kind heart, pray for and love those who struggle with the good gift of gender that God has given them.
On Life
We believe that every human being is created by God in His image (Genesis 1:27). Human life is therefore sacred, including pre-born babies, the aged, the physically or mentally challenged, and every other stage or condition from conception through natural death. We are therefore called to defend and protect all human life. To unjustly take any human life in any way, including by abortion or euthanasia, is sinful and is an offense against God (Exod. 20:13; Ps. 139:13-16). God abhors murder, yet we read of King Manasseh in 2 Chronicles, a king who submitted his children to be sacrificed at the altar of false gods, that “And when he was in distress, he entreated the favor of the Lord his God and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers. He prayed to Him, and God was moved by his entreaty and heard his plea and brought him again to Jerusalem into his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the Lord was God.” There is hope in Christ for the worst offender of God, and in this, we have hope in the grace of Christ who saves us out of death and brings us into life.
