What We Believe
Through the ages, the church has been a central instrument in education. As believers in Jesus Christ, we hold that being able to learn is part of what it means to be made in God’s image. Learning is meant to lead us toward a better understanding and ability to express the truth of Christ in beautiful and winsome ways. Therefore, it is only fitting that this pursuit of learning and truth would happen in the community of the classroom.
However, we live in a world that is broken by sin, and humanity’s search for meaning becomes futile when it is severed from God’s revelation in Scripture. The classroom is becoming an increasingly polarized place where meaning and truth reside in each individual and his or her truth claims. The school system today tends to be a manifestation of the mainstream culture instead of an environment that can help students and teachers to love God’s truth with mind and heart.
We know the task at hand is large and requires constant prayer, thoughtfulness, preparation, and sacrifice, but we set out with certainty that the goal is worth the effort as we seek to honor and glorify God in the education of covenant children by cultivating a love for Christ through the truth of scripture and beauty of creation.
Covenant Christian Schools Statement of Faith
Covenant Christian Schools embrace and teach from a theological position that is in conformity with the Presbyterian Church of America (PCA) statement of faith and the Westminster Confession doctrinal standards, both of which can be found here. The following is a summary:
We believe the Bible is the written word of God, inspired by the Holy Spirit and without error in the original manuscripts. The Bible is the revelation of God’s truth and is infallible and authoritative in all matters of faith and practice.
We believe in the Holy Trinity. There is one God, who exists eternally in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
We believe that all are sinners and unable to save themselves from God’s displeasure, except by His mercy.
We believe that salvation is by God alone as He sovereignly chooses those He will save. We believe His choice is based on His grace, not on any human individual merit, or foreseen faith.
We believe that Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God, who through His perfect life and sacrificial death atoned for the sins of all who will trust in Him alone for salvation.
We believe that God is gracious and faithful to His people not simply as individuals but as families in successive generations according to His Covenant promises. (Deut 20:6)
We believe that the Holy Spirit indwells God’s people and gives them the strength and wisdom to trust Christ and follow Him.
We believe that Jesus will return, bodily and visibly, to judge all mankind and to receive His people to Himself.
We believe that all aspects of our lives are to be lived to the glory of God under the Lordship of Jesus Christ.
Statement on Marriage, Sexuality, Gender, and Life
On Marriage
We believe the term “marriage” has only one meaning: the uniting of one man and one woman in a single, exclusive union, as delineated in Scripture (Gen 2:18-25).
On Sexuality
We believe God intends sexual intimacy to be enjoyed only between a man and a woman with mutual consent within the marriage union (1 Cor. 6:18-7:5; Heb. 13:4). We believe that any sexual activity outside of marriage, i.e. any form of sexual immorality, including but not limited to adultery, co-habitation, fornication, rape, homosexual behavior, bisexual conduct, bestiality, incest, use of pornography, etc., is sinful and is an offense against God (Matt 15:18-20; 1 Cor. 6:9-10; Rom. 1:24-27; Exod. 20:14; Lev. 18:6-23).
On Gender
We believe that God wonderfully and immutably creates each person as male or female. These two distinct, complementary genders together reflect the image and nature of God (Gen 1:26-27). Rejection of one’s biological sex is sinful and is an offense against God.
On Life
We believe that every human being is created by God in his image (Genesis 1:27). Human life is therefore sacred, including pre-born babies, the aged, the physically or mentally challenged, and every other stage or condition from conception through natural death. We are therefore called to defend and protect all human life. To unjustly take any human life in any way, including by abortion or euthanasia, is sinful and is an offense against God (Exod. 20:13; Ps. 139:13-16).
